Believe it or not fear of public speaking tops the lists of phobias in various surveys done around the world.
Do these statistics really matter. Just imagine, most people rate the fear of public speaking above the fear of death!
Yes, that exactly what it is for some people.
Reacting to one such survey result comedian Jerry Seinfeld got a big laugh and he joked "In other words, at a funeral, the average person would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy."
Death is irreversible event and yet it stands 4th in the list of fears. Fear of snakes comes above it. Fear or phobias generally are self-created illusions. Therefore it is not a surprise that death is not feared as much as public speaking.
However, irrational it may sound the fear is fear. it is a condition which has been defined by the mind and belief gets strengthened as every occasion of speaking becomes such an ordeal that you dread doing it again.
Overcoming the fear of public speaking is easy but until it is really taken care of, the mind can't believe it otherwise.
Another dimension to this problem is that many people may have the fear of public speaking but may not admit it. Therefore, the number of people suffering from the fear of public speaking may be much lager than those published statistics.
